January 26, 2012: Pedestrians Are Advised to Keep Ears Open

New studies show that the habit of walking around with an iPod or mp3 player plugged into your ears has its dangers. The New York Times reported that after examining statistics from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and other databases, researchers at the University of Maryland found 116 accidents from 2004 to 2011 in which pedestrians wearing headphones or ear buds were injured by vehicles. More than half the accidents involved trains, and there were 81 deaths and 24 cases with life-threatening injuries.  The study is not suggesting that any legislation be passed to restrict the use of ear phones by pedestrians, but rather that people use their discretion when listening to music while walking in areas trafficked by motor vehicles.
