February 1, 2012: Girl, 15, Allegedly Raped on Cruise Ship

A 15-year-old girl and her family’s vacation turned into a nightmare when the girl was lured into a room and raped by two suspects, the authorities say. The suspects are 20-year-old Luiz Scavone and an unnamed 15-year-old boy, both natives of Brazil. They were arrested when the ship, the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas, returned to port form its ten day trip that began Christmas day.

The incident occurred on the final night of the trip when the girl met the teenage boy at a teen dance club on the ship and he invited her to what she believed would be a party. The boy lured her to his room where Scavone was waiting and both suspects prevented her from leaving and raped her according to arrest reports. It has been reported that Royal Caribbean offered the girl medical care and other attention and is cooperating with investigations.

Scavone is being charged with committing a lewd and lascivious act and the unnamed 15-year-old is accused of lewd and lascivious battery.  Scavone’s criminal defense attorney says that his client comes from a good family and plans to plead not guilty, maintaining his innocence.
