Nov. 22, 2010: Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. Recalls 90,000 Drop-Side Cribs

On November 22, 2010, Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. of Bassett, Virginia recalled 90,000 drop-side cribs sold between January of 2000 and August of 2010. The cribs are sold with the label "Bassettbaby" or "Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc." attached to the footboard or headboard. Consumers are being direct to call the company at (800) 308-7485 to obtain a free kit to immobilize the drop side and to stop using the cribs until this dangerous condition is remedied. Prior to the recall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received 154 complaints involving failed hardware. In approximately 5% of the incidents, babies have gotten caught in between the frame and mattress. Three incidents involved babies that fell out. Luckily, no serious personal injuries have been reported. For more information about this recall, see the CPSC's website.
This is just the latest recall in a series of drip-side crib recall's involving this dangerous design. The chairman of the CPSC has declared this crib design to be a dangerous hazard, and new industry guidelines proposed in July 2010 would ban the design.
