Dec. 16, 2011: New York Elevator Accident Ends in Death

Suzanne Hart, 41, was crushed to death in front of two witnesses in a horrific elevator accident that points to issues with how elevators are maintained and repaired.

Apparently, electrical maintenance had been performed on the deadly elevator hours before the accident in a midtown Manhattan building, according to a New York City Buildings Department spokesman, said The New York Times. “This work has now become the focus of our investigation,” Tony Sclafani, said, according to The Times.

Hart just stepped on the elevator when it sped up, doors open, crushing her between the elevator’s exterior and the wall of its shaft. Two people were inside the elevator when the accident occurred.

The Buildings Department said it plans on conducting sweeps of all Transel Elevator Inc. maintained elevators in the city, said The Times. Transel is the company that serviced the elevators at 285 Madison Avenue, where Hart was killed this week.

Meanwhile, another Manhattan elevator death involved Transel and killed Robert Melito, 44, a Transel technician, said The Times. Melito was servicing an elevator at 230 West 38th Street this September. He fell to his death.

And, another accident, said The Washington Post, significantly hurt another woman, Deborah Jordan, who was dragged eight floors in a horrendous New York elevator accident last year. Her arm and leg were crushed against the elevator shaft’s wall when a repairman incorrectly disabled a safety switch. Prosecutors announced charges in that case this week. The repairman, Jason Jordan (no relation to Deborah Jordan) was charged Thursday with assault and reckless endangerment; Jordan was released without bail, said The Post.

The Post pointed out that 53 elevator accidents were reported in 2010 in New York City.
